ALBANY -- The number of millionaires in New York soared following the national recession, up 63 percent since 2009 and up 15 percent between 20, state data shows.
The rise in millionaires – who live mainly in New York City and its suburbs, including Westchester County – comes at a time when New York leaders are debating whether to retain a higher tax on individuals making more than $1 million a year.
Cuomo said he would ask the state Legislature to add $25 million in grants to the state budget for the fiscal year that starts April 1 to bolster security at religious schools, community centers and day-care facilities.
Jewish Community Centers across the nation have been targeted by bomb threats, including ones in Manhattan, Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo.
The so-called millionaires' tax on high earners expires at year's end, and Gov. Some Democrats want even higher income-tax rates on the rich, while Republicans want to let the current rates expire.
